Throughout his career, Sen. McGovern has focused on nutrition, food and hunger at home and around the world. In 1960, President Kennedy appointed him the first Director of the Food for Peace Program. In 1977, the Dietary Goals for the United States was published by the McGovern Senate Select Committee, which highlighted the potential contribution of high fat and sugar consumption to the development of obesity, heart disease and other chronic diseases afflicting the health of Americans. He was also involved in planning the first White House Conference on Nutrition and the subsequent development of the Women's Infants and Children's nutrition program (WIC). Sen. McGovern has served as the Ambassador to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the U.N. and, as of December 2001, he will be the United Nations Global Hunger Ambassador, as appointed by Secretary Thompson. "McGovern has been a leader in bringing people together to address the complex issues of hunger and nutrition. There couldn't be a more appropriate speaker for the first Nutrition Week, which brings together a wide range of nutrition organizations for the first time," says Steve Heymsfield, MD of St. Lukes/Roosevelt, Columbia and a member of the Convenor Council. Nutrition Week, a Scientific and Clinical Forum and Exposition, is scheduled for February 23-27 in San Diego, CA. The event combines the 26th Clinical Congress of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the 2002 Annual Meeting of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, with scientific contributions from the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, the American College of Nutrition and six other nutrition related professional organizations. With over 65 symposia on nutrition related topics and 528 original abstract presentations, Nutrition Week is a unique event for clinicians, researchers, nutrition support professionals, nurses, pharmacists and nutritionists.
